The Enlightenment Literary Arts Center

The Adult Reader

Book clubs meet and discuss the book of the month. Individuals may also come to listen or just read.  We offer a quiet place of solitude or of boisterous debate, all in the name of literature.

Facilitators offer book lists, discussion topics, or perhaps assist adult readers around the store to discover what to read next.

This program will also offer a "book match" where people can consult a list to find what other works are being read. The idea is to have at least two people reading the same book at any given time, providing them the opportunity to meet at the bookstore and discuss the book, or simply become more social through reading.

Sundays are for senior citizens to offer them a day to shine, as oral history discussions will be offered as well as a place to read and discuss world events through various books, newspapers and guest authors.

The Latchkey Reader

An after-school program where children come to the Arts Center and work on literary homework, projects, papers, and works in progress. Facilitators will be present to assist with schoolwork.

The center will have all the reading lists from surrounding schools and we are prepared to assist students in the comprehension of the works.  It is also a time and place to just come and read or to seek help when stuck.

This afternoon program brings children to reading and writing, and helps them understand its importance while giving them a useful and safe place to go after school.

Enlightenment on Wheels

We purchase new books and regenerate used ones brought back to the store by our customers, and we supply them to the elderly and home bound. Many senior citizens are not ambulatory, are hospitalized or lonely, and we are here to offer them a place to go and people to meet through the words and stories that have lived throughout time.

Read with Me

Read With Me offers a place and a time where the great, often misunderstood works recommended by high schools can be read, re-read and discussed by students and their parent(s).  Students are able to come alone and simply read, as could their parent(s).

The intent of this program is to bring books and other literature back into the home while offering a connection to teenagers and parents.  Discounts on future purchases are available if the selected book is purchased at the bookstore and donated back to augment our other programs.

Little Saturdays

Split into age groups and conducted on a bi-monthly basis, books are chosen and read to children with the intent of adapting the book into a play or performance.  Every seven to eight weeks, parents, grandparents, friends and relatives will be invited to attend the plays, readings, acts or other creative works the children have taken from the readings and discussions.

This program highlights how reading and writing are fun and can lead to other literary activities. It is a program that grabs the reader and writer at a young, important age and never lets go!

Vocabulary Enrichment

Targeted at high school- age students who are on the brink of standardized tests, this program helps ease the anxiety often felt when facing such testing.  It assists students in the weeks prior to PSAT's, SAT's, and high school entrance exams in becoming familiar with questions and offers a method of maximizing time and test skills.

We hope with the aid of local government officials dedicated to producing college-bound students, we can soften the students’ anxieties and be better prepared for standardized testing and help our future with their opportunity to attend the high school or college of his/her choice.

Don't Just Read It Write It

This program is designed to get everybody writing!  From resume- writing to short stories to list preparation, any writer will find a home here. Guest lecturers and local writers are invited, on occasion, to conduct lectures and workshops, offer writing tips and advice, and share stories and words of encouragement.

From children's magazines to local newspapers to national publications, our writers have opportunities to submit, through our connections, to publications that know our objectives and commitment and help writers see their works to publication. Working hand in hand, writers, facilitators and publishing companies offer wonderful pieces of life and realize writers’ dreams.
